The School of Law, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics (ZUFE) was officially inaugurated in 2002. Its origin traces to the Law Department, ZUFE, which emerged in 1999 and whose enrollment of students for the undergraduate program of Economic Law began only one year before. Although young, the School of Law remains so energetic as to be entitled to grant Master Degree in Economic Law Studies in 2005 and Master Degrees in all sub-fields of Law in 2010.
At present, the School of Law boasts two key disciplines at the university level. One is Sociology while the other is Law in support of the Doctrinal Program of Government Supervision over Metropolitan Utilities.
The School of Law presently offers two undergraduate programs, namely, Law and Social Work. The former enters the list of ZUFE’s key programs and sponsors an experimental class for creative students in particular, while the latter ranks with the Law School’s key programs. In addition to various labs for non-litigation legal profession and comprehensive legal skills, a moot court and a case analysis studio function for practical teaching.
Our library seeks to provide empirical research support in law and sociology with more than 120 domestic and foreign scholarly periodicals, 20 important newspapers and above 5,000 books in the collection
Our students have the opportunity to take a highly qualified curriculum which features the remarkable spectrum of our faculty’s expertise and interests. This curriculum ranges from the provincial elaborate course of Economic Law to other elaborate courses such as Civil Law Studies, Economic Law Studies, Business Law, International Economic Law, Administrative Law and Administrative Procedure law and Debt. Also available to students during their time at the School of Law are 10 university top-quality courses, namely, Tax Law Studies, Criminal Law Studies, Jurisprudence, Environment and Natural Resources Protection Law, Constitutional Law Studies, An Introduction to Sociology, Community Work, Chinese Society, Competition Law Studies and Chinese Legal History.
Currently, we implement a broad sub-disciplinary system mainly covering Legal Theory, Legal History, Constitutional Law & Administrative Law, Litigation Law, Criminal Law, Civil & Business law, Economic Law, and International Law, as required by the Master Degree programs of Law. Such graduate programs include Legal Theory, Constitutional Law Studies & Administrative Law Studies, Civil & Business Law Studies, and Economic Law Studies. Next to Law is the sub-discipline of Applied Sociology with the program of Social Work as its orientation.
The School of Law has founded a variety of research programs as incubators for original ideas in law and sociology. These “idea laboratories” include four university-level institutes with a commitment to Jurisprudence, Civil and Business Law, Economic Law and Social Policy, as well as eight school-level institutes respectively for Legal History, Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Litigation Law, Environmental and Natural Resources Protection Law, Social Construction and Social Work, and Cultural Psychology.
Our research is facilitated by more than 50 projects, among which 10 are sponsored by National Social Science Foundation of China and 11 are sponsored by Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education of China while others are Provincial or Ministry Social Science Planning Projects.
Consequently, we produce conspicuous work in a wide range of fields and disciplines. This work comprises 30-odd awards for academic achievements from about 40 masterpieces and textbooks to more than 300 articles in such scholarly journals as Chinese Journal of Law, Xinhua Digest, Chinese Social Science Digest, Management World, China Legal Science, Peking University Law Journal, Tribune of Political Science and Law and so on.
Our faculty is as broad ranging in Law and Social Work as it is distinguished to ensure high quality of teaching. It consists of 43 professional teachers including 13 professors and 15 associate professors. We take pride in such prominent scholars as 2 Ph.D. Candidate Supervisors and 17 Master Candidate Supervisors. Besides, 35 teachers are Ph.D. or Ph.D. Candidates. Quite a few teachers resume membership or standing membership in China Institutes of Jurisprudence, Legal History, Civil Law, Commercial Law, Economic Law, and Tax Law.
Throughout the School of Law, a spirit of collaboration reigns. We are devoted to
(1) Promote a regular academic exchange and cooperation relationship with more than 10 higher institutions in such countries and regions as the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Also closely related are universities prevailing at home like Peking University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Central University of Finance and Economics, and more;
(2) Operate the Pioneering Center for Legalization of Social Administration in Zhejiang with the People’s Procuratorate of Zhejiang, Legislative Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, Civil Administration of Zhoushan Municipal People's Government and more;
(3) Maintain various practical and training bases in procuratorates, courts, legislative affairs offices and other government agencies together with law firms;
(4) Foster two training centers for law and social work. We attempt to provide an appealing environment of academic excellence and educational intimacy for 706 undergraduates and postgraduates. Such student clubs as Law Society produces several publications including Legal Language and Insight. With their teachers’ guidance, our students witness admirable academic achievements, including more than 50 research projects, approximately 100 articles and 40-odd awards during recent years. Also distinguished are colorful extracurricular activities with endurable reputation, like Legal Culture Festival, Student Club Festival, Freshmen Training Camp, etc.
Our students excel in various campus contests. Our education prepares students for success in legal practice and social service both as public officials and private workers. In recent two years, more than 40% of them passed the National Judicature Test. Furthermore, an increasing number of graduates have got admitted for postgraduate programs in such prestigious higher institutions as Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University, China University of Politic Science and Law, Southwest University of Politic Science and Law, East China University of Politic Science and Law, and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.
Thinks to a solid foundation of legal science and advantages in finance and economics, the School of Law becomes a community of commitment to excellence and to service for the greater good. It is small by design; its impact on the local economy is measured by its accomplished graduates with high professional morals, solid academic knowledge and strong practical skills.
