The 2020 Elsevier "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" list uses Scopus, the world's authoritative citation and index database, as the source of data for Chinese scholars' scientific research results, and adopts the selection method designed by Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Finally there were 4023 most globally influential Chinese researchers in all disciplines included on this list.

In 2020, China's highly cited scholars came from 373 colleges and universities, enterprises, and scientific research institutions engaged in 84 different disciplines.
